This class has been specifically designed to challenge students to achieve a new level of thinking and awareness in English. Our goal is to help the students be able to think and learn in English.
Class Goals:
Students will be learning Intermediate Level:
·Reading comprehension (reading and understanding a story)
·Proper sentence structure (how to properly write a sentence)
·Proper grammar (punctuation, tense, etc.)
·Writing expression (how to express advanced thoughts in writing)
·Paragraph structure (how to write a paragraph)
·Vocabulary (learning new words)
·Using vocabulary (constant use of new words and not just when asked)
·Critical thinking (thinking outside of the box and how to understand what is implied as well as what is said)
·Group discussion (use English to discuss different ideas related to the stories and express how they feel about the concepts).

·Wordly Wise 3000 book 4
The Eclectic Reader is a fantastic book to push kids into a deeper understanding of the English language. It provides a basis for the class discussions and writing assignments.
WordlyWise3000 book 4 is a fantastic for increasing vocabulary and reading comprehension.
Example Lesson:
Today, we will be reading the passage‘ Courage and Cowardice’ in your The Eclectic Reader book.
Passage:
First,we will discuss all words the students do not know. The teacher will ask questions to make sure the students understand all words in the passage.
Second,we will start discussing deeper meanings, such as: What is the moral of the story? What do we learn from this story?
This will take some time, because we will discuss many different aspects of the story and each student will be given a chance to explain what they think.
Third, we will write. The teacher will prepare questions about the passage varying in purpose. Some questions will be designed to challenge students to find information in the passage and word their answer correctly. Other questions will be about critical thinking and will require students to explain what they think, for the answers can not be found in the passage.
Fourth,students will be split into two teams. Each team will be given a scenario of something that has happened. They will be asked to explain whether they believe what happened was cowardice or courage and to give examples of why. This will be a speaking exercise.
These are just a few examples of the many different activities students will complete.
Summary:
At the end of the semester the students will have a better understanding of how to read, comprehend deeper material, and have a discussion with others on what was read to get a broader understanding.
I will be pushing students to learn in the areas, I think, they are weakest in. For example, vocabulary. Students learn many words in school and in class, and yet they do not use these words except when asked to.
